ProAvio EditBOX 8 MS

TMS SKU#PREB8MS

Product Overview

How does an 8 TB Array screaming at 515 MB/s in RAID 0 or 500 MB/s in RAID 5 for thousands less than other solutions sound?

ProAvio introduces the next generation SAS-ready, miniSAS SATA storage solution designed for content creation professionals who have outgrown their current array of external FireWire drives, and are ready to explore the world of high-resolution media. With 8 removable SATA drives and a high-speed miniSAS SFF8088 interface, EditBOX 8 MS can support Uncompressed HiDef video in a RAID 0 or 5 environment that is significantly cheaper than SCSI or Fibre, without sacrificing speed. Aimed at video editors using AJA, BlackMagic, Bluefish444, Grass Valley/Canopus and Matrox AxioLE cards.

MiniSAS vs eSATA

While similar, these two technologies use different HBAs (Host Bus Adapters) to connect the enclosure to the computer. eSATA is more common with numerous cards available for both desktop and notebooks. MiniSAS has certain advantages though - a far more rugged connector on both the enclosure and the miniSAS card (latch lock) that ensures a cable doesn't accidentally pop off. MiniSAS is also faster, especially in a RAID 5 scenario. MiniSAS is best for people needing RAID 5 protection and high speed. Also, eSATA cables are limited to 2m, where SAS can be 5m.

Benchmarks

Benchmarks will of course vary depending on the system, the miniSAS card, motherboard, hard drives used, but these will give you a guide on what to expect.

Single Drive (JBOD Scenario)
Atto R380 - 80 MB/s Write, 80 MB/s Read (Hitachi 7K1000)

RAID 0 (8 Drives)
Atto R380 - 515 MB/s Write, 535 MB/s Read (Hitachi 7K1000)

RAID 5 (8 Drives)
Atto R380 - 505 MB/s Write, 460 MB/s Read (Hitachi 7K1000)

NOTES:
- Drives used in these tests were Hitachi 7K1000 750GB drives, and benchmark results were from AJA System Test, with frame size set to 1920x1080 10 bit, File Size 2 GB. MiniSAS cards were Atto.
- The benchmarks were recorded on a MacPro Tower Octo 2.8.

The Box

The EditBox 8 MS system comes in a silver aluminum enclosure. It uses a backplane design to connect the drives, which means no internal cabling. Just slide the drive in, and the drive connects with the backplane for both power and data. Two miniSAS ports (SFF8088) on the back to connect to the miniSAS ports (SFF8088) on the SAS card. Fan is fairly quiet and hot-swap in the event of failure. Power supply is built into the box, so there is no external power brick to worry about.

Dimensions
6" W x 17.5" D x 11.5 " T
15cm W x 44cm D x 29cm T

What's In The Box: Enclosure, 8 hard drive trays, power cable, hard drive screws, and keys to lock drive trays. We also include 2 x MiniSAS to MiniSAS cables 1m.

Qualified Hard Drives

TMS Photo Video recommends Hitachi or Seagate SATA drives. The EB 8 MS supports 1 TB drives.

Qualified MiniSAS Cards
This enclosure connects to the computer with two cables to a MiniSAS card. While in theory any MiniSAS card will work, these are the cards that either ProAvio and TMS Photo Video have tested. As we test various cards, we will update this list.

Optional Accessories

Spare Hard Drive trays - TMS Sku#PRTRAY - Spare hard drive tray that allows you to add more hot-swap drives to your ProAvio enclosure. This tray fits numerous ProAvio enclosures, allowing you to swap drives with numerous enclosures. Fits the ProAvio X4, EditBox 4PM, 8PM, 10PM, 4ML, 8ML and 8MS. Also fits the Sonnet Fusion 400 and 500 enclosures.

1m miniSAS to miniSAS Cable - TMS Sku#PRMS1 - Replacement cable for the one that comes with the 8MS. One end is the MiniSAS SFF8088 that goes into the MiniSAS card, and the other end is the MiniSAS SFF8088 that connects to the enclosure. This cable will also work with any enclosure that has the MiniSAS SFF8088 connector.

2m miniSAS to miniSAS Cable - TMS Sku#PRMS2 - One metre longer than the one that comes with the 8MS. One end is the MiniSAS SFF8088 that goes into the MiniSAS card, and the other end is the MiniSAS SFF8088 that connects to the enclosure. This cable will also work with any enclosure that has the MiniSAS SFF8088 connector. NOTE: Atto does not recommend cable lengths longer than 1m with its R380 or H340 cards when using SATA drives. Longer than 1m can be used if using SAS drives.

5m miniSAS to miniSAS Cable - TMS Sku#PRMS5 - When 2m is not long enough, this 5m cable comes to the rescue. One end is the MiniSAS SFF8088 that goes into the MiniSAS card, and the other end is the MiniSAS SFF8088 that connects to the 8MS enclosure. This cable will also work with any enclosure that has the MiniSAS SFF8088 connector that uses SAS drives. NOTE: SPECIAL ORDER - takes 4 weeks! Also, only recommended for EB8MS with SAS drives, not SATA drives.
